What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a procedure that uses implants to enlarge small breasts and rebalance breasts of different size or proportion.   It is also the procedure used to recreate the breast size and shape that a woman had before pregnancy and/or nursing.  Many times a patient will be interested in just “filling out the skin” where the breast was before pregnancy.  Breast augmentation is a very gratifying procedure for many women who would like to regain their pre-pregnancy figure.

Why Breast Augmentation?

Women have many different reasons for choosing breast augmentation. Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery of Annapolis offers several types of procedures to enhance the size, shape or contour of their breasts. Patients chose to have breast augmentation surgery to improve the balance of their figure, correct the loss of breast volume and firmness due to pregnancy, nursing, weight-loss or age.

Dr. Kelly Sullivan will help breast augmentation patients achieve symmetry with breast size due to underdevelopment or as a reconstructive need. Breast augmentation will help to improve the fit of clothing, swimsuits, overall appearance, confidence and self-image.

When interested in getting a breast augmentation, patients need to understand that the ideal size and shape for their breasts depends on both their body’s frame and their own personal preferences. Our breast enhancement specialist Dr. Sullivan works closely with each patient to create a breast surgery plan that specifically matches her desires and image of her breast’s ideal shape to her body’s form and function.

When you meet with Dr. Kelly Sullivan you won’t be rushed. She makes sure there is enough time for a thorough consultation so she can clearly understand your goals for your cosmetic surgery. Her patients are guided through the process by her helpful and supportive office staff, ensuring that all of their concerns are addressed and questions are answered.

Types of Breast Implants

Women now have more options than ever before in choosing a comfortable, safe, natural looking implant for a breast enhancement. Implant options can be narrowed to two types: Silicone (gel) and Saline (salt water). There is now a new generation of silicone gel implants, called Memory Gel(TM), recently approved by the FDA. You will be able to talk about those options with Dr. Kelly Sullivan during your consultation.

The Consultation:

Because we always put safety first, Dr. Sullivan begins every consultation by discussing your overall health and wellbeing.

Our next considerations are:

- Your goals for the outcome of the surgery. Dr. Sullivan will work with you to determine that your expectations for your post-surgery breast size are realistic and attainable.

- Your frame and current breast size, shape and width. Are you hoping to lose a significant amount of weight either before or after surgery? What size breasts would be most appropriate for your body frame?

- The amount of sagging you presently experiencing. This, too, affects how Dr. Kelly Sullivan will perform the surgery.

Procedure & Results Regarding Your Breast Augmentation:

Your breast enhancement surgeon; Dr. Kelly Sullivan will make a small incision, usually located under the lower portion of the breast near the chest wall. A pocket is created for the implant either under the breast tissue or under the chest wall muscle. Once this pocket is created, the implant is carefully placed, centered beneath the nipple and the skin is sutured.

A breast augmentation surgery with Dr. Sullivan takes approximately one hour. This surgery is done on an outpatient basis with general anesthesia. Because safety is always our first concern, we always work with board-certified Maryland anesthesiologists to ensure that your surgery is as safe as possible. Following your surgery, you will be able to rest in the comfort of your own home.

Although patients are usually back to work in less than one week, breast implants still require time to heal after breast augmentation.   The acute recovery is between five days and two weeks, but it will be six weeks before you should resume heavy lifting or aggressive exercise. Your implants will at first feel high and tight, this is the body’s natural response to recent surgery. It takes three to six months for the implants to settle and relax and give the kind of natural look that patients seek. This is something that patients need to consider before undergoing a breast augmentation surgery.

If you’re thinking of breast augmentation surgery with a specific timeframe in mind, try to leave a window of at least six to twelve weeks for surgical scheduling.  If you have very specific time limitations please call our office to discuss your particular needs and we will make every effort possible to accommodate your busy schedule.

**NOTE: The specific risks and the suitability of this procedure for any given individual can only be determined through a consultation with Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Kelly Sullivan.
